Just like many other commercial websites, our website uses ‘cookies’ and server logs to get information about how you use our site, including time and date of visits, what pages were viewed, how much time was spent on our site, and your IP address. We collect your IP address for profile and demographic data, which is a part of traffic data. IP address is also recorded when you complete a quiz on our site. If you send us an email, we will keep your message content, email address, and responses.
Cookies and IP address
A cookie is a text document that often incorporates an anonymous but unique identifier. When you visit some site on the Internet, that website’s computer communicates with your computer and asks for permission to store this small text file on your computer’s hard drive in the folder that is set up for cookies. If your browser allows it, the website also sends its own cookie to the browser. The IP address is a special address used by your computer when it connects to the Internet. It is a number that is needed to identify your computer. Our website automatically collects IP addresses by our webserver as part of the traffic data (includes profile and demographic data) in order for the data (your requested Webpages) to be sent back to you. We use Clicky and W3Counter plugin for this purpose and you can Opt-Out here: Clicky Opt-Out, W3Counter Opt-Out.
We also collect IP addresses when our platform members submit forms or upload data for our citizen science projects. These IP addresses are needed to assure accurate data collection and information/data transmission to our platform members. Members are notified when their IP address is collected and can opt out by not submitting forms or uploading data.
Our data collection web app requires manual geolocation to identify the location where behavioral and/or acoustic data was collected. We DO NOT automatically collect geolocation data and the platform members are asked to manually provide the location of data collection. They can choose to opt out and not provide this information.
